Nazrul Islam

Kazi Nazrul Islam, also known as the rebel poet, was a popular Bengali poet, writer, lyricist and the national poet of Bangladesh. Nazrul composed a large body of poetry, music, messages, novels and stories on various topics including Islam, justice, anti-imperialism, humanity, rebellion against oppression and religious devotion. Nazrul Islam's activism for political and social justice as well as writing a poem titled "Bidrohi", which means "rebel" in Bengali, earned him the title "Bidrohi Kabi" (rebel poet). His compositions form the Guli (music of Nazrul) genre.

Born into a Bengali Muslim Kazi family in Burdwan district of present-day West Bengal, India, Nazrul Islam received religious education and served as a muezzin in a local mosque as a youth.
